Mustang means “fertile plain” in their local language. This is the ancient kingdom of Lo. It is located in north-central Nepal, with the border of the Tibetan Plateau between the Dolpo and Manang regions.

The Mustang is divided into two parts: the Lower Mustang and the Upper Mustang. Upper Mustang is known as the region of the Kingdom of Lo. This region is a magical blend of nature’s wonders and cultural treasures, making it a paradise on Earth. To enter these two regions, you must have a different permit. Kagbeni is the official border of Upper Mustang, where the permit checkpoint is located. Just after Gyu La (pass) east of Kagbeni takes you into the deep hidden magical world of incredible authenticity of the Tibetan Buddhist cultural tradition and the kingdom of Mustang “Lo” which was part of the Tibetan empire.  Tibetan Buddhism is still practiced in a very pure way and their settlements are also the same as in Tibet. Thus cultural life is very closely linked to Tibet. Mustang is still like an independent kingdom socially and culturally, that’s why its unique authenticity lives on as before.
